   Counselling

Adolescents & children

My counselling approach is person-centred, strength-based and solution-focused, working with you as your own expert and agent of change.  Identifying and working with your strengths and values, I use a number of different brief interventions (3 - 6 sessions) such as Focused Acceptance Commitment Therapy (FACT), Trauma Focused ACT (TFACT), Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Strengths Programmes and Mindfulness Based Stress-Reduction Programmes (MBSP/MBSR), or more long term therapies that work at a slower pace, including Narrative and person-centred.  In session, you will be able to work in whatever way suits you: drawing, writing, talking, metaphor, picture cards, role play, use of sand tray, experiential mindfulness practices etc.

I have supported many clients with a range of issues including:

  • Anxiety and Panic disorder

  • Depression

  • Suicidal ideation

  • Trauma

  • Grief and loss

  • Disordered eating

  • Relationships

  • Positive parenting

  • Work related stress & burnout

  • Life transitions & resettlement

  • Identity & LGBTIQA+

  • Substance use

Cultural counselling

I am Pākehā and as a Treaty Partner I am keen to keep travelling on my cultural journey to locate myself and ally with my Treaty Partners Tangata Whenua. Our culture can be a very important part of our identity and I make no assumptions about anyone's culture based on their ethnicity, race, religion or country of origin. My way of working with different cultures is to seek an invitation into another's culture, to help me understand what it is like to live in a way that may be different to my own.  In terms of 'ways of working' culturally, I find that my eclectic training which offers a wide range of therapeutic interventions enables me to work collaboratively with clients in a way that promotes autonomy and is most helpful to them.

I have found that the therapeutic relationship forms very quickly.  I hope you will feel heard, accepted without judgment and valued, and offer clarity and skills/resources for you to practice on your journey to living well.

Counselling can take kanohi-ki-te-kanohi face-to-face in Howick, or, via Zoom online. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about how online counselling works.

Confidentiality

Abiding by the New Zealand Code of Ethics, all counselling sessions are confidential, this means that I am not allowed to share any of your information with anyone else apart from my professional supervisor.  There is one exception to this.  I can not keep confidential any risk of harm/danger to your life or someone you know.  In such cases, we work together with a support team to widen this circle of confidentiality to promote safety.
